Salt Water Farm Cafe & Market- Rockport, Maine
On my way to a cooking class at Salt Water Farm in Lincolnville, Maine this summer I made a beeline to their new cafe and market in Rockport, Maine and that was a splendid idea, if I do say so. Salt Water Farm chef and founder, Annemarie Ahearn and head chef, Justin Barrett, have created a phenomenal dining experience in historic Union Hall on Rockport Harbor. It is perfectly situated with water views from their deck and dining room, beautifully designed with an open kitchen, simple vintage furnishings, gleaming copper cookware and fantastically flattering lighting. In my book, it was heaven and that was even before I had eaten.
The concept is akin to family dining with larger portions intended to be shared, but that’s not to say that there weren’t plenty of options for small plates and lighter fare. I indulged in their grilled mussels and they did not disappoint-the warm, minimally dressed oysters were fresh and oh so tasty.
I shared with the friendly, attentive and cheerful waitstaff that I was headed up to the farm for a class and a few minutes later Annemarie appeared at my table and joined me for a bit of a chat. I could tell right then that her class would be right up my alley as she is engaging and charming despite the fact that she is on the fast track for chef celebrity with her ability to suss out what’s on point and knows how to execute it.
Treat yourself- schedule a class at the farm up the road in Lincolnville, make reservations at the cafe and be sure to take in the classic Maine quiet sophistication of the area. You won’t be eager to go home and if like me, still pining over the experience.
